Technology of the Week: How Does Re-ID work?

Re-identification (Re-ID) technology leverages each person’s unique biometric characteristics, such as body shape, size, clothing color, and hairstyle, to track individuals across different cameras. By focusing on these appearance-based features, Re-ID ensures the same person can be identified as they move between camera views or exit and re-enter a building, preventing double counting and improving the accuracy of foot traffic analysis. This non-intrusive approach avoids the use of personal identifiers, such as facial recognition, ensuring that privacy is maintained.

FootfallCam 3D Pro2 is now utilising Re-ID technology to enhance several key measurements in its analytics tools:

  • Visit Duration: By logging the timestamps when the same person enters and exits the building, Pro2 can accurately measure how long individuals spend inside, providing valuable insights for optimizing store layouts and customer flow.
  • Unique Visitor Count: Re-ID technology helps discount instances where the same person leaves and re-enters the building within a short period, such as 15 minutes, ensuring more accurate visitor counting without duplications.
  • Staff Exclusion: By identifying staff members based on their recurring presence, Re-ID can exclude them from the footfall heatmaps and traffic reports, offering cleaner data for visitor analysis.

It’s important to note that FootfallCam’s Re-ID technology does not use facial features in its process. Furthermore, none of the information captured is stored or accessible by FootfallCam or its customers, ensuring full compliance with GDPR and safeguarding individual privacy.
